Introduction

Online education has gained ground in Colombia in recent years, driven by technological advances and the need to adapt to new ways of teaching and a clear example of this is how enrollments in face-to-face programs decreased and virtual programs increased, which has forced traditional universities to reformulate their strategies. The National Open and Distance University has been a pioneer in this model, offering thousands of students the opportunity to access educational programs regardless of their geographic location, especially in rural and remote areas. This modality has made it possible to overcome physical and economic barriers, giving many Colombians the possibility of accessing higher education. However, like any modality, online education has both advantages and disadvantages, which must be analyzed to ensure its effectiveness and accessibility for all.

Positive aspects

One of the main benefits of online education in Colombia is the flexibility it offers. Students can manage their time more efficiently, adapting study to their personal schedules, which is especially useful for those who work, have family responsibilities or live in remote areas where face-to-face educational options are limited. In addition, the ability to study from anywhere eliminates geographical barriers, making higher education accessible to people in remote locations or with mobility difficulties. The variety of courses and programs available is increasing, allowing students to choose from a wide range of academic options according to their interests and professional needs. This diversity of educational offerings also makes it easier for more people to access the training they want, regardless of their socioeconomic status, promoting inclusion and equity in access to education. In this way, online education not only benefits those who have access to physical institutions, but also opens new opportunities to a greater number of Colombians.

Negative aspects

Virtual education in universities in Colombia has some drawbacks. One of the main ones is that students have less social interaction, which can make them feel more isolated and less motivated. In addition, not everyone has access to good technology or the Internet, which can lead to inequalities. Also, the lack of direct supervision can lead to organizational problems and procrastination, as students must be more autonomous. Technical problems, such as platform or connection failures, can also disrupt learning. In some careers, the lack of in-person practice means that students are unable to develop certain skills adequately. Also, online assessments do not always accurately reflect what students have actually learned. Finally, both students and teachers have to constantly adapt to new tools, which can be challenging for some.

Conclusion

Online education in Colombia has proven to be a tool with great potential to democratize access to education, allowing students from diverse regions, including rural and remote areas, to access quality academic programs without the need to travel. Despite its benefits, it also presents challenges, such as lack of social interaction, technical problems and inequalities in access to technology, which can affect the quality of learning. For this modality to be truly effective, it is essential to improve technological infrastructures and provide the necessary support to both students and teachers to adapt to the new tools. From my perspective, with the appropriate adjustments, online education can become a solid and accessible alternative for all Colombians, contributing to the transformation of the country's educational system.
